Information is provided to specifiers and users of surge-protective devices (SPDs) about the application considerations of SPDs associated with power distribution systems within North America. This guide applies to SPDs to be connected to the load side of the service entrance main over current protective device of 50 Hz or 60 Hz ac power circuits rated at 100 V to 1000 V rms. The effects and side effects on the presence and operation of SPDs in low-voltage power distribution systems are described. The coordination of multiple SPDs on the same circuit is described.

This standard is a guide to aid in the selection and application of AC high-voltage circuit breakers on electrical power systems. Described in the guide are the general application conditions, application considerations, and short-circuit considerations necessary to apply alternating current circuit breakers. This standard is a revision of ANSI/IEEE C37.010-1972. This revision contains substantive revisions due to the efforts of a working group on revisions to C37.010-1972, and editorial changes as a result of general power circuit breaker consolidation efforts. Three substantive ns are included. The first involves deletion of a Procedure Chart, from Section 5.3, page 26, of the previous standard. The second substantive revision is an expansion of the statements in 5.3.2 involving the general terms "one transformation" and "two or more transformations" to recognize large external impedances such as long lines or station service transformers. The third substantive revision involves the rotating machine reactance table of multipliers on page 40.

The purpose of the mechanical operations test for high-voltage air switches is to demonstrate the ability of a completely assembled switch to operate satisfactorily during its operating life expectancy. The test code has been patterned after IEC Publication 129, Specifications for Alternating Current Disconnectors (Isolators) and Earthing Switches, paragraph 48. The following specific comments noted are to assist in the evaluation of each section of the supplement stated below: 4.3 It is necessary to motor operate at minimum and maxium control voltage (as in IEC Publication 129) because operation at other than rated control voltage may produce significantly different forces and stresses from those produced during norma! voltage operatian. 4.4 IEC Publication 129 allows lubrication during the test, These proposed revisions do not. 5.3 Final judgment for acceptable completion of the mechanical nperations test (if there is any concern about contact pressure loss, voltage drop increase, or resistance increase through mechanical wear) requires satisfactory completion of a temperature rise or short-time current test.

The low voltage air gap surge protective device is a gap-type overvoltage limiter for use on communications, power and signalling circuits. This IEEE standard applies to air gaps for overvoltage protection applications on systems with operating voltages equal to or less than 600 V.

This document provides guidance on surge testing AC power interfaces of equipment connected to low-voltage circuits that are subject to transient overvoltages. An important objective is to call attention to the safety aspects. Planning a surge test program is a complex task involving many considerations, from the nature of the equipment and purpose of the test to procedures and instrumentation. Major issues recognized include: (1) Outcome of the test and failure criteria: upset or damage? (2) Type of tests: design tests involve pushing stresses to the limits while production tests are more likely to be pass/fail types. Diagnostic tests involve reproduction of field failures in the laboratory. (3) Appropriate selection of a voltage wave or of a current wave, or both, depending on the nature of the test piece and on the expected pass/fail criteria. (4) Implementation of the test. The document is organized in sections dealing with the major points of these considerations. References are made to detailed notes in the appendix to provide a more comprehensive treatment.

Superseded. Gas-tube surge-protective devices for application on systems with voltages 1000 V rms or 1200 V dc are covered. These protective devices are designed to limit voltage surges on balanced or unbalanced communication circuits and on power circuits operating from dc to 420 Hz. Test criteria for determining the electrical characteristics of these devices are provided.
